(Lake Erie) In 1971, 16 Ohio beaches on Erie closed; now only 1 closed. Song written by Pat Daley with regard to Erie pollution noted. [DALEY - sings part of song.] Reasons for cleanup of lake noted. [Hammermill Paper Company representative Dr. Richard BROWN - describes company's efforts to clean up itself and lake.] Despite efforts, lake still polluted, especially at large cities. [Great Lakes Lab. representative Dr. Robert SWEENEY - says wouldn't drink Cleveland and Detroit lake water.] Sweeney is director of Great Lakes Lab which analyzes Erie each day. Sweeney cites 2 main points learned from analysis: Erie worse than rest of Great Lakes, but it's getting better. [SWEENEY - says it was more liability than asset, but appears to be turning around now.] People of Erie, Pennsylvania, believe Sweeney's optimism. [Bill SCHELINSKY - says cleanness of water seems to be incring.] Both commercial and sport fishermen aware of change. [Rudy ORMAN - notes increase in fishing.] Some scientists wary of optimism with regard to cleanups fear lapse in anti-pollution efforts which could cause relapse in Erie's progress.
